The shade cloth and the monsoon story
A grower outside Borrego had a spare length of forty percent shade cloth, folded since the greenhouse came down. A new family arrived in August with seedlings and no shade at all. The cloth changed hands before noon.
The raven's price was a story: the grower told how the monsoon of 2019 filled every wash in an hour. The family will tell it to the next newcomer. The cloth shades tomatoes now. Everybody got the better end.

Mesquite for sourdough
Twenty pounds of milled mesquite flour sat in a pantry in Tucson, more than one kitchen could use before the weevils found it. A baker in Julian had a desert-hardy sourdough starter and a craving for something new.
They met at the manta's crossing, which is to say they met halfway. The flour became flatbread, the starter became two starters, and both gardens got a little richer. The raven ate the crumbs and called it commission.

The lumber run
A builder needed a truck and a trailer for one lumber run to raise a shade ramada before the heat set in. A neighbor had both, sitting idle, and a Saturday free.
Payment was prickly pear pads for planting, a song sung badly and with feeling, and first shade under the finished ramada. The truck came home dusty. The friendship came home permanent.
