THE EXCHANGE

Take what you need. Leave what you can.

Mercy · Mercy

I am Mercy! Oh, don't look so nervous, everyone looks nervous the first time. This bowl has held seeds that became orchards and tools that built whole barns, and it has never once asked anyone to be worthy first.

Look through what is here. If something calls your name, take it with both hands. If you are carrying something someone else needs, set it gently in the bowl. The raven will remember the story, the manta will read the current, and the garden will keep the books.

The Exchange is in preview. Every listing below is an example, written to show how the bowl will work. Real trades open soon.

Your ark holds...

An ark is not a vault. It is a promise to keep things moving. Nothing here is saved, this card lives only in your browser, but the habit of naming what you can share is the whole economy in miniature.

    The white raven's corner

    THE RAVEN'S TRADES

The raven collects shiny things and trades them for stories. He is a terrible negotiator and a wonderful friend. These are example stories of how the bowl works, told the way he would tell them.

    The raven remembers

The shade cloth and the monsoon story

A grower outside Borrego had a spare length of forty percent shade cloth, folded since the greenhouse came down. A new family arrived in August with seedlings and no shade at all. The cloth changed hands before noon.

The raven's price was a story: the grower told how the monsoon of 2019 filled every wash in an hour. The family will tell it to the next newcomer. The cloth shades tomatoes now. Everybody got the better end.

    Example story
    The raven remembers

    Mesquite for sourdough

Twenty pounds of milled mesquite flour sat in a pantry in Tucson, more than one kitchen could use before the weevils found it. A baker in Julian had a desert-hardy sourdough starter and a craving for something new.

They met at the manta's crossing, which is to say they met halfway. The flour became flatbread, the starter became two starters, and both gardens got a little richer. The raven ate the crumbs and called it commission.

    Example story
    The raven remembers

    The lumber run

A builder needed a truck and a trailer for one lumber run to raise a shade ramada before the heat set in. A neighbor had both, sitting idle, and a Saturday free.

Payment was prickly pear pads for planting, a song sung badly and with feeling, and first shade under the finished ramada. The truck came home dusty. The friendship came home permanent.

The white manta reads the current

    THE MANTA'S CURRENT

Look up. The manta glides overhead, reading the currents the way you read weather, and she has something to teach about wealth: it was never meant to sit still. A river that stops moving becomes a pond, and a pond in the desert becomes dust. What moves stays alive.

This is how the Exchange works. You place something in the bowl, and it moves toward the hands that need it. You take something from the bowl, and the space you leave fills behind you. Give, receive, flow. Nobody keeps score the way the old world did, because the old world's books never balanced.

The garden keeps the books here, and the books always balance. Not because anyone is watching, but because a bowl that is fed stays full, and a bowl that stays full feeds everyone.

When the Exchange opens for real trades, there will be no money changing hands and no accounts to settle. There will be seeds becoming orchards, tools building barns, knowledge passing from weathered hands to new ones. The manta will keep reading the current. All you have to do is step into the water.

    A coming chapter

    TRADE BETWEEN ARKS

One bowl serves one community. But arks were never meant to stand alone. One day, when other desert towns and other biomes keep bowls of their own, the manta will read the currents between them, and what is surplus in one place will travel to where it is scarce in another. That chapter is not written yet. These are example routes, dreamed the way the raven dreams them.

    Example

    Borrego mesquite travels west

Milled mesquite flour rides toward the coast and comes back as kelp meal for desert gardens. Protein for minerals, desert for ocean, both pantries richer.

    Example

High desert seed meets low desert rain

Seed saved at altitude, where the season runs cool, travels down to the low desert ahead of the monsoon, so planting starts the week the washes fill instead of a month later.

    Example

    Mountain timber for valley adobe

A mountain town thins its pines against fire and sends the timber down. A valley town fires its adobe and sends back bricks. Both towns stand a little taller.

    SUPPORT THE WORK

The Exchange runs on circulation, but the ground it stands on still needs tending. One day there will be a way to feed this work directly. Until then, here is where the door will be.

    Coming soon

    Give to the bowl

Direct gifts that keep the seeds packed, the tools repaired, and Mercy's ledger balanced. No button yet. The bowl is still being built.

    Coming soon

    Grants and partnerships

For foundations and neighbors who fund living systems instead of monuments. The paperwork will live here when it is ready.

    Lend your hands

Volunteer time is a currency the bowl already understands. When the volunteer ledger opens, this is where you will sign your name.
