The Living Garden

• Soil is a sponge. Beans feed it; squash leaves shade it, so less water is lost to the sun.
• Pests are signals, not villains. Ladybugs eat aphids. Flowers like the desert marigold (a real Anza-Borrego native) invite them in.
• Companions beat rows of one crop. The Three Sisters (corn, bean, squash) is a planting system developed by Indigenous farmers of the Americas.
• Catch the rain. In the desert, the summer monsoon is the year's big water. Every drop saved counts.
