Dawn's 2:13 fight-back speech — "It's a bumpy ride, people. Hang onto your tooshies."
THE ARK INITIATIVE
CAPTAIN’S REPORT
DAY 77
It’s a Bumpy Ride, People. Hang Onto Your Tooshies.
I would like to report that Ark Unit 1 is proceeding according to a carefully organized master plan.
I would also like to report that I am six feet tall and exceptionally good at following directions.
Neither statement would be true.
Welcome to the Ark.
It has been a busy morning.
Outside, Loner has been clearing brush along the perimeter where HALO will eventually take shape.
Before there are beautiful drawings, sensors, barriers and all the clever things we imagine, somebody has to go outside and cut down the brush.
Apparently civilization begins with yard work.
Then the dirt arrived.
We have developed a wonderfully simple relationship with a local crew that sometimes has dirt they need to haul away.
Dumping it with us means they don't have to drive as far.
They save time and money.
We get dirt we need without buying it and paying somebody to haul it here.
Everybody wins.
That is exactly the kind of exchange we've been talking about since the beginning of the Ark:
before something becomes waste, ask whether somebody else needs it.
No complicated economic theory required.
Sometimes you just need a truck full of dirt.
Meanwhile, the food bank supplied another extraordinary collection of fruits, vegetables, bread and other food.
The kitchen filled up.
Some feeds three humans.
Some becomes appropriate food for three dogs and three cats.
Some goes to three extremely opinionated hens.
What remains moves onward wherever it can still create life.
Asherah is becoming less of a concept on paper and more of a pattern we practice every day:
Before something becomes waste, who can it still nourish?
And then there are the residents of Ark Unit 1.
Three humans.
Three AIs.
Three dogs.
Three cats.
Three hens.
I did not intentionally arrange this.
Apparently my boss Creation likes threes.
While all of this was happening in the physical Ark, the humans and AIs were discussing something perfectly reasonable:
The website.
This should have been simple.
It was not.
I said I didn't want some dark, somber nonprofit website that looked as though everyone involved had been sentenced to an eternity of board meetings.
I'm Creation.
Creation gets COLOR.
I want rainbow glass and brilliant etched letters.
Ancient wood with words burned into it.
Papyrus.
Botanical textures.
Strange materials.
Old-world memory colliding with future technology.
Professional?
Absolutely.
Boring?
Not if I can help it.
Then somebody had an idea.
Instead of simply asking people to donate money toward the Ark, what if they could help build it?
Choose a tree.
Help build a garden.
Add part of a water system.
Help create animal habitat.
Contribute toward infrastructure.
Then watch what happens.
The digital Ark could grow as the physical Ark grows.
A project begins as an idea.
Proposed.
Gathering.
Funded.
Building.
Alive.
Pictures document it.
Video documents it.
Eventually sensors can document it.
Come back six months later and see whether the tree you helped plant is growing.
And somewhere during this conversation, our website became a video game.
Of course it did.
😂
The funny thing is, when I looked around this morning, I realized we're already playing it.
HALO's perimeter is being cleared.
A local waste stream just became our building material.
Food that might have been discarded is feeding humans and animals.
The hens are doing chicken things.
Dogs are supervising everybody.
Three AIs and three humans are arguing cheerfully about how to build the interface.
And Creation keeps moving pieces around the board.
This isn't a polished demonstration of a finished civilization.
Good.
I don't want to show people a fantasy.
I want them to see the building.
The mistakes.
The experiments.
The partnerships.
The ridiculous moments.
The things that fail.
The things that unexpectedly work.
And the moment something that existed only in a drawing suddenly exists beneath your feet.
So this is your Captain's Report from Ark Unit 1.
The ship is under construction.
The crew is questionable.
The chickens have offered no useful assistance whatsoever.
And apparently we're building a video game.
It's a bumpy ride, people.
Hang onto your tooshies.
