As I sit here, reflecting on a life that has taken unexpected turns, I am reminded of a conversation I had with a remarkable woman – an accomplished rider and author. She called me, seeking advice on navigating a path she never imagined, a path that led her away from the active, physical lifestyle she cherished. Facing the uncertainty of life with ALS, she asked, "How did you do it, all from the bed?"

I shared with her a perspective born out of my own experiences,a journey from confinement to liberation, from the cocoon of uncertainty to the rebirth of self. Life can thrust us into a scary, unknown future, demanding us to adapt, to change. It's a process akin to crawling into a cocoon. You must grieve for the life you once knew, for the person you used to be, and embrace the unknown that lies ahead.

In the cocoon, who you're going to become remains a mystery. It's a daunting prospect, and the fear can be paralyzing. But within that fear lies the potential for transformation. Armed with the power of your mind and a warrior spirit, greatness is still within reach, even from a bed.

To the lady on the other end of the line, I emphasized the importance of having a support system, a cocoon of its own kind. Change is inevitable, much of it beyond our control, but with the right mindset, we can harness the strength to endure and adapt. I encouraged her not to view this as the end but rather a new beginning,an opportunity to sculpt a different, equally meaningful life.

In times of profound change, it's crucial to allow yourself to evolve. Grieving for the person you once were is a necessary step in embracing the person you are becoming. The cocoon is a crucible of transformation, a place where resilience is forged.

Life may feel like a series of losses, but within those losses, there is an incredible capacity for gain. I assured her that, even in her altered circumstances, she could still make a difference. Her life was not over; it was just taking a different form, presenting new challenges and opportunities.

To anyone facing the upheaval of their known world, I offer this advice: Adapt, change, and live. Embrace the unknown with the understanding that within it lies the potential for greatness. Your journey doesn't end; it merely takes a different path, one that, with the right mindset, can lead to a life filled with purpose and fulfillment. So, my friend, embrace your cocoon, for within it lies the promise of a beautiful, transformative flight towards greatness.
