Some differences between typical people and those with autism that are not commonly known are:
- Brain development in autistic individuals differs from people with typical neurodevelopment, especially in the communication between the left and right hemispheres and the genes involved in inflammation, immunity response and neural transmissions¹.
- The hemispheres of ASD brains have slightly more symmetry than those of a regular brain, which may affect the processing of language, emotions, and social cues².
- People with ASD may have different sensory perceptions, such as being more sensitive or less responsive to certain sounds, smells, tastes, textures, or lights³.
- People with ASD may have different learning styles, strengths, and challenges, such as being good at visual-spatial tasks, memory, or attention to detail, but struggling with abstract thinking, executive functioning, or generalizing skills⁴.
- People with ASD may have different communication patterns, such as using fewer gestures, facial expressions, or eye contact, or having difficulties with pragmatics, humor, or sarcasm⁵.
These differences are not necessarily bad or wrong, they just reflect the diversity and complexity of the autism spectrum. People with ASD can have fulfilling and meaningful lives, especially with the support and acceptance of their families, friends, and communities. 😊
